Research interests of:
Matthew Cavalli
I am the main contact for the Materials Processing and Analysis Laboratory (201/201A Upson I). My past research work has involved a variety of aspects of materials behavior and both experimental testing and numerical modeling. Past topics include fracture of adhesive, spot welded and weldbonded joints, energy dissipation in fiber composites, and the effects of processing on the fracture behavior of aluminum. My current work focuses on corrosion fatigue of bulk and friction stir welded aluminum (in conjunction with the Engineered Surfaces Center) and diffusion bonding of metals.
More information about the capabilities of the Materials Processing and Analysis Laboratory can be found at: http://www.me.und.edu/html/melabs.html#mpal.
For more information about my research and teaching activities, see http://www.und.nodak.edu/instruct/mcavalli/.
My research lab is located in 201/201A Upson I. It houses various equipment for preparing, testing, and examining material samples. In addition to typical sectioning/mounting/polishing equipment, granite examination tables, and metallurgical microscopes, our specific capabilities include:
Bose Electroforce 3500 Corrosion Fatigue System (Late Fall 2008)
50 kN Shimadzu AG-IS Universal Test Frame w/Extensometer
Digital Image Correlation Measuring System
1600C 3.5" Dia Vacuum Tube Furnace
1200C Box Furnace
Vicker's Microindentation Hardness Tester
Rockwell Hardness Testers (2)
Spex 8000M Mechanical Mill
15 Ton 12" X 12" Hydraulic Sample Press
Gilson Electromechanical Shaker (sieves to 75 micron opening)
